ORCKA Flat-water/Basic Canoe Course
This two-day course is designed for the novice canoeist who would like to learn how to paddle their canoe safely and with confidence. It is also for the ‘self taught’ or more experienced canoeist who would like to improve on their skills. For those who are interested in working in the canoeing business, this course is the first step to becoming a certified instructor or guide.

Participants will learn both tandem and solo canoeing. Emphasis throughout the course is on safe canoeing practices while mastering the fundamentals. We have lots of fun, too!

Successful participants will receive certification for Flat-water Levels A to D by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association.

Skills Taught

The specific skills taught in this course are the following:
 
Safety Theory
Retrieving a swamped canoe Equipment selection, knowledge and care
Canoe over canoe rescue Government regulations
Re-entering canoe Safe canoeing procedures
  Outdoor and windy weather precautions
 
Paddling Skills
Entering and exiting canoe Turns and circles
Paddling positions Stopping
Changing positions in the canoe Landings
Pivoting Reverse straight line
Moving Sideways Lifting, carrying and transporting the canoe
Forward straight line

The course will run from 5pm-9pm Friday and 9:00 to 5:00 Saturday & Sunday on the following dates, at the locations specified.

Cost
The cost of the two day program is $260.00 per person. This includes the canoe, paddle, all safety equipment.
HST and admission to Brant Conservation Area extra

Learn to canoe and kayak from the experts at Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company, a fully insured and accredited ORCKC member. We have been instructing safe paddling since 1999.

 

Accommodations

Riverside camping available at our Brant Conservation Area rental concession.
For those coming from out of town who wish to stay overnight in the area, please call and ask us about local camping, bed and breakfast or hotel accommodations or click here.

What to Bring
2 bottles of water per person per day
Two pairs of shoes (keep one dry); sandals are not recommended
Warm clothing
Complete change of clothes – keep a dry set in your vehicle
Rain gear – course runs regardless of weather (within reason)
Sunscreen
Hat and sunglasses
Bathing suit and towel
Foam pad to kneel on (blue closed cell foam pads work well)
Recommend small ball (smaller than a soccer ball) to sit on to take weight off ankles when kneeling
