Grand River Conditions for Cambridge, Glen Morris, Paris and Brantford as of:

Due to cold water temperatures (below 10c) we are now closed for the 2012 paddling season

Grand River paddling conditions update:

As our ongoing commitment to safety Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company will not run trips with river flows higher than four times summer flows and water temperature lower than 10 c.

Grand River flows are measured in cubic meters per second (C.M.S) and are monitored hourly in real time.

Trips between Cambridge and Paris (including Glen Morris-Paris)

max 60 C.M.S (15.1 C.M.S normal summer flow)

Paris to Brantford (The Oxbow) (including Paris to Brant Conservation Area and Paris –D’Aubigny Creek)

85 C.M.S max (20.7 C.M.S normal summer flow)

Colour Codes:

Great paddling conditions

Caution: elevated river flows and or cool water temperature.

Danger: High river flows and or cold water temperature, severe weather expected or happening.

Things to remember before heading out on the river:

River flows can change drastically within a few minutes due to heavy rain not only in the local paddling area but in the north end of the Grand River watershed. Flows can also rise due to discharge from the reservoirs up stream at Lake Belwood and Lake Conestogo.

The above safety standards apply to all Grand and Nith River canoe, kayak and raft trips run by Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company.

Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company has a risk management plan in place and has an excellent safety record. At Heritage River we will not but dollars above safety, it’s our guarantee to you.

We offer canoe, kayak and raft trips and rentals on both the Grand River and Nith River

Why choose Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company?

Customer Service:

At Heritage River customer service and safety are our primary concerns. We have won and been nominated for awards in Customer Service Excellence. Our business is built on repeat business, word of mouth and good old fashioned customer service. If there’s ever a problem we’ll make it right. “We’ll be there on time so that you have the best time.” We have been providing great canoe, kayak and raft trips for a long time….since 1999 to be exact. We are now going into our 14th season and we are still under the original management/owner.

Safety:

The Grand River is known as a very safe river to paddle with an average water depth of about 3’ on the stretch that passes through Cambridge, Glen Morris, Paris and through to Brantford.

At Heritage River we guarantee you that we will not put profit over your safety. Heritage River has some of the strictest safety standards to be found on the river. We will not put you out on a trip if it is unsafe to do so.

At Heritage River we monitor river flows, water temperature and weather conditions in real time. We look at what the conditions are before your trip and what they will be while you are on the river.

Before putting customers on the river we will do a safety orientation with you and your party. Not only going over basics like paddle strokes but what to do if something happens while on the river. We are firm believers in the old Boy Scout motto “don’t be scared, be prepared”.

Every year Heritage River puts thousands of people from all over the world on the Grand River and they have safe and enjoyable trips.

Heritage River has an up to date risk management plan in place and works along with other Grand River outfitters and emergency services to keep trips safe no matter what could happen. Heritage River is fully insured and works along with the Grand River Conservation Authority providing trips for their summer camps. We also provide trips for many schools and universities.

Environment:

At Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company we believe in giving back to our environment and have been nominated for many environmental awards. For the past 7 years we have helped organize and sponsor the “Grand Paddle”. Since its beginning the Grand Paddle has generated thousands of dollars that have gone into watershed rehabilitation projects in the area. Over three thousand trees have been planted to help re-establish the Oak savannah and Carolinian Forest that the Grand River passes through. As a major part of the Grand Paddle, Heritage River organizes a river and trail clean-up. Literally tons of refuse have been removed from the river and trail systems each year. We teach our clients to “Take only pictures and leave only ripples”.

Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company is one of the longest operating companies in the Grand River watershed and is still operated by its founder Adam Fernley….no new management here.

Heritage River specializes on trips on the Grand and Nith Rivers. Our resources are focused right here in the Grand River Valley not other locations throughout the area and the province. This means our attention is solely on you, the valued customer and is not elsewhere.

Our Equipment:

Heritage River uses only the best equipment:

Canoes made by Mad River, Oldtown and Nova Craft

Kayaks made by Dagger, Aqua Fusion and Riot

Each canoe, kayak or raft is equipped with all legal safety items

Your canoe, kayak or raft trip or rental also includes a properly fitting PFD and paddle.

Heritage River staff:

Our staff and guides are qualified, professional and courteous and have worked on and around the river for many years……they know the river like the back of their hand and have guided hundreds of trips for us. Many of our guides have been with us since the beginning in 1999. If you went on a guided trip with us in 1999 you may still get the same guide. They will show you the river they way they would show it to their family and friends.

Shuttle Service:

When being shuttled before or after your trip you will be put in a vehicle that has regular safety check-ups and is insured for shuttling commercial passengers.

The Grand Paddle was a huge success. Well over one ton of garbage was removed from the river. Much of the grabage had been in the river for decades.

One of the best ways to reconnect as a family is to get out into the great outdoors. There is something very timeless about the family camping trip, parents reconnecting with their children away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Even smaller activities can have a huge effect on family communication. Going for a hike or bike ride are great stress relievers and get the kids off the couch or away from the computer.

Another wonderful way a family can reconnect is on a raft trip. As rafts can carry more than two or three people they are ideal for the family to get out into nature and stay close to each other without anyone wandering off on their own.

Many people think of rafting as a thrill sport with lots of rapids and white water. However the rafting we are talking about is more placid and great for family members of all ages. These are rafting float trips where the raft gently glides down a moving river giving the occupants plenty of time to take in the natural surroundings and spend time communicating with one another.

One such area that offers rafting float trips is the Grand River Valley. The Grand River can be found just a 100km’s or so west of Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe and makes for great day trips, weekend getaways and even a vacation/staycation. There are several canoe, kayak and raft trip outfitters on the Grand River that offer guided and self-guided canoe, kayak and raft trips. One such outfitter is Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company www.heritageriver.com . Since 1999 Heritage River has taken thousands of people from all over the world down the Grand and helped them reconnect with themselves and nature. They offer raft float trips from mid April through early November. Heritage River rafts range in length from 13’ which are great for a family of up to 8 persons to 20’ rafts which can accommodate 16 or more. The 13’ rafts are ideal for families as they are light and easy to control and therefore can go self-guided. For those wanting to take a weekend or vacation/staycation Heritage River also offers riverside campsites at Brant Conservation Area or discounted room rates at the Best Western Brant Park Inn or Hampton Suites.

So this summer get out into the great outdoors and reconnect as a family with each other and nature. Come and have a truly Grand eco rafting adventure on the beautiful and historic Grand River.
