One of the best ways to reconnect as a family is to get out into the great outdoors. There is something very timeless about the family camping trip, parents reconnecting with their children away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Even smaller activities can have a huge effect on family communication. Going for a hike or bike ride are great stress relievers and get the kids off the couch or away from the computer.

Another wonderful way a family can reconnect is on a raft trip. As rafts can carry more than two or three people they are ideal for the family to get out into nature and stay close to each other without anyone wandering off on their own.

Many people think of rafting as a thrill sport with lots of rapids and white water. However the rafting we are talking about is more placid and great for family members of all ages. These are rafting float trips where the raft gently glides down a moving river giving the occupants plenty of time to take in the natural surroundings and spend time communicating with one another.

One such area that offers rafting float trips is the Grand River Valley. The Grand River can be found just a 100km’s or so west of Toronto and the Golden Horseshoe and makes for great day trips, weekend getaways and even a vacation/staycation. There are several canoe, kayak and raft trip outfitters on the Grand River that offer guided and self-guided canoe, kayak and raft trips. One such outfitter is Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company www.heritageriver.com . Since 1999 Heritage River has taken thousands of people from all over the world down the Grand and helped them reconnect with themselves and nature. They offer raft float trips from mid April through early November. Heritage River rafts range in length from 13’ which are great for a family of up to 8 persons to 20’ rafts which can accommodate 16 or more. The 13’ rafts are ideal for families as they are light and easy to control and therefore can go self-guided. For those wanting to take a weekend or vacation/staycation Heritage River also offers riverside campsites at Brant Conservation Area or discounted room rates at the Best Western Brant Park Inn or Hampton Suites.

So this summer get out into the great outdoors and reconnect as a family with each other and nature. Come and have a truly Grand eco rafting adventure on the beautiful and historic Grand River.

The Grand River and Grand River Valley lie in the heart of southern Ontario. Being the largest watershed in southern Ontario at just under 300km’s long it has become known as an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

The Grand River offers many outdoor pursuits from bird watching and wildlife viewing, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, canoeing, kayaking and rafting. There are several different eco systems the Grand passes through as it winds its way south to Lake Erie. It contains about 85% of the endangered species found in Canada and the largest section of Carolinian Forest left in Ontario.

The Grand River Valley has many trail systems including a section of the Trans Canada Trail. These multi use trails are great for the hiking or biking enthusiast. Another great way to enjoy the Grand River is by canoe, kayak or raft. Heritage River Canoe Kayak and Raft Trip Outfitters www.heritageriver.com have been offering such trips since 1999. No matter whether you choose a canoe, kayak or raft you will be amazed at how scenic and beautiful this wonderful river is. Paddling the Grand River (in normal flows and with the exception of Elora and the Elora Gorge) is great for all ages and paddling skill levels from the novice paddler to the more advanced paddler and is a great way for family and friends reconnect with themselves and nature. There are still however some dams that must be portaged on the river depending on the section of river you wish to paddle, so please check with the GRCA (Grand River Conservation Authority) or an area canoe, kayak or raft trip outfitter before going on a trip.

The central location of the Grand River Valley makes it a popular travel destination for those living in the golden horseshoe and Toronto areas though large metropolitan centres like London are close by as well. The Grand River is also very close to the border towns of Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake, Fort Erie and Buffalo. The Grand River passes through the cities of Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge and Brantford.

Though this area is great for day trips it is also a wonderful place for a weekend getaway or vacation/staycation. Camping is available at many Grand River Conservation Authority run conservation areas. If camping is not for you there are also many hotels and B&B’s within the watershed. For those looking for a romantic weekend getaway there are the wonderful villages and small towns of Fergus, Elora and Paris With riverside accommodations, restaurants and cafe’s they offer prime vistas of the river. Some area canoe, kayak and raft trip outfitters even offer guided romantic moonlight floats. There’s nothing like drifting down the Grand River under a blanket of stars with the one you love to get the heart racing!

No matter what direction you are coming from the Grand River is easy to get to and both highways 401 and 403 pass over it.

Come and experience the beautiful Grand River and Grand River Valley and see why it is one of the best travel designations in Ontario. Happy Paddling!

Centrally located in the heart of southern Ontario, the Grand River Valley encompasses southern Ontario’s largest watershed. The Grand River itself is almost 300 km’s long and is fed by other rivers like the Conestoga River and Speed River. The Grand River Valley and watershed is managed by the Grand River Conservation Authority and though the valley holds a large human population much of the river remains untouched making for a wonderful near wilderness experience as the Grand River Valley is only an hour or so drive from all of southern Ontario’s major population centres like Toronto/GTA and London. The Grand River even passes through large cities like Kitchener/Waterloo, Cambridge and Brantford. This close proximity to all of these cities means you can have a great wilderness experience with minimal driving time and cost. Visiting the Grand River Valley can be a day trip, weekend getaway or full blown vacation.

The Grand River Conservation Authority operates many conservation areas throughout the watershed many of which offer overnight camping and picnic areas.

The Grand River Valley is known for an abundance of outdoor activities including: Fishing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

Bird Watching and Wildlife Viewing:

There are an estimated 292 bird species in the Grand River Valley including many rare and endangered species. Birds of prey including the Bald Eagle have also made a comeback in the Grand River watershed. Great bird watching areas include Luther Marsh at the north end of the watershed and Bying Marsh at the south end near Lake Erie. If you would like more information on bird watching in the Grand River Valley you can visit the Grand River Conservation Authorities website at www.grandriver.ca

The Grand River Valley contains over 80% of all the endangered species found in Canada and is the only place some of these species can be found. The Grand River and its banks abound with wildlife from Painted Turtles to Whitetail Deer.

Sport Fishing:

Over 80 species of fish can be found in the Grand River and its tributaries. The Grand River is world renowned for its Brown Trout fishing and the area of the Grand where Whiteman’s Creek enters between Paris and Brantford is now one of the ten best Rainbow Trout fisheries in the province of Ontario. Other sport fish in the Grand River Valley include Pike, Steelhead and Small Mouth Bass to name just a few. A great reference book for planning a fishing trip to the Grand River Valley is “Fishing the Grand River” published by the Grand River Conservation Authority.

Hiking and Biking:

There are many hiking and biking trails within the watershed. The area around Elora is particularly scenic as the Grand River passes through the Elora Gorge. Camping and picnic areas are available at the Elora Gorge Conservation Area. There is also tubing through the gorge. The towns of both Fergus and Elora other great views of the Grand River and have many riverside cafes. The Grand Valley Trail also travels the entire length of the Grand River. Though the Grand Valley Trail has sections that can be biked much of it is hiking only. A section of the Trans Canada Trail travels from Cambridge to Paris then Brantford. The town of Paris is also a great place to stop for a cold one on a hot summer’s day. Paris also has riverside cafes with great views of the beautiful Grand River. The city of Brantford is a hub of the Trans Canada Trail system and is also located on the main Via Train and bus lines. The city of Brantford also offers over 40km’s of hiking and biking trails within its city limits many of which travel along the banks of the Grand River. There are many campgrounds, hotel and B&B’s in this area for a weekend getaway or full vacation. Brant Conservation Area is located on the west side of Brantford and offers riverside camping and is adjacent to many of the hiking and biking trails.

Cross Country Skiing & Snow Shoeing:

All of the areas mentioned above are also great areas to go Cross Country Skiing and Snow Shoeing. Other areas include the Dickson Wilderness and Pinehurst Conservation Area located between Cambridge & Paris and Apps Mill Nature Centre just west of Brantford.

Canoe, Kayak or Raft

Over the last few years the Grand River has become known as an amazing paddling destination. Whether canoeing, kayaking or rafting, the Grand is great for any skill level.

You can rent canoes and kayaks by the hour or day at Pinehurst Conservation Area, Brant Conservation Area and Bying Island Conservation Area. Trips on the Grand River can be arranged with area canoe, kayak and raft trip outfitters like Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company www.heritageriver.com . Many outfitters along the Grand River offer shuttle service so you just park your car at the end of your designated trip and the outfitter will shuttle you up river. You then simply paddle back to where your car is parked. Most outfitters will also do a safety orientation with you before putting you on the river. They will also go over points of interest on the trip and paddle strokes etc so that you have an enjoyable experience. Heritage River Canoe & Kayak Company even sends maps with their clients….not that you would be able to get lost, with points of interest marked on the map and contact information. One of the most scenic areas in the Grand River Valley to paddle is between Cambridge, Paris and Brantford. This stretch of the river travels through a steep valley where the banks are lined with Carolinian Forest which is now extremely rare in Canada. The stretch is in fact the largest remaining section in the province of Ontario. The stretch of the Grand River between Paris and Brantford has also been designated as “Exceptional Waters”. This is the only area in the Grand River Valley that has this designation.

The Grand River Valley has so much to offer and is so close to home. So get outside with your family and friends and visit the beautiful and historic Grand River and have a truly grand Eco adventure.
